The famed Empire Builder

Travel from Chicago and Midwest points to Whitefish, MT aboard the Empire Builder train, a scenic overnight journey over the BNSF Railway. Guests may also board at Milwaukee or Minneapolis.

Exceptional in-depth touring of Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Arches, Canyonlands and Grand Canyon National Parks. Plus visits to stunning Dead Horse State Park and Monument Valley.

Fine hotels

Well-chosen and located hotels throughout with breakfast daily. Specialty meals for lunch and dinner are also included on some days in places of note. The majority of our hotel stays are two-nights.

Your adventure begins at Chicago's Union Station as you step aboard Amtrak's Empire Builder. Settle into your comfortable accommodation and watch as the familiar city skyline gives way to the landscapes of America's heartland.

Travel westward through Wisconsin's rolling countryside and Minnesota's forests as the golden light of evening stretches across the plains. Enjoy dinner aboard the while the scenery unfolds outside your window, then retire for the night as the rails carry you toward the magnificent landscapes ahead

Montana's Big Sky Country

Awaken to ever-changing scenery as the Empire Builder continues westward across the vast landscapes of the northern plains. Rolling farmland gives way to open ranch country, distant mountain ranges, and the dramatic beauty of Montana’s ‘Big Sky’ country.

Arrive this evening in Whitefish. A short transfer brings you to your hotel, where you can relax and prepare for tomorrow's unforgettable introduction to Glacier National Park.

Glacier National Park Montana

Today reveals one of America's most spectacular wilderness areas.

Travel along the legendary Going-to-the-Sun Road, an engineering masterpiece carved through Glacier's rugged mountains. Around every bend awaits another breathtaking scene—towering peaks shaped by ancient glaciers, cascading waterfalls, alpine meadows filled with wildflowers, and crystal-clear lakes reflecting the surrounding wilderness.

Watch for mountain goats and bighorn sheep as you explore this extraordinary landscape. Later, enjoy a scenic cruise on beautiful Lake McDonald, gliding across pristine waters surrounded by forests and dramatic mountain peaks.

As evening settles over the Rockies, return to your hotel with memories of a day spent in one of America's most magnificent national parks.

Paradise Valley

Leave Glacier behind and travel through the remarkable landscapes of western Montana. Follow broad valleys, peaceful rivers, and sweeping ranchlands beneath endless skies. We enjoy time in historic Livingston before continuing into spectacular Paradise Valley, where the Yellowstone River winds between the towering Absaroka Mountains. This peaceful corner of Montana offers a perfect introduction to the natural wonders awaiting you in Yellowstone.

Yellowstone National Park

Enter Yellowstone through the historic Roosevelt Arch and begin your exploration of this legendary wilderness.

Discover the wildlife-rich Lamar Valley, where you can often see bison, elk, coyotes, grizzly bears, and black bears. Continue to Tower Fall and the magnificent Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, where the powerful Lower Falls plunge into a colorful canyon carved over thousands of years.

Pause at Artist Point for one of the park's most breathtaking views before settling into your lodge surrounded by Yellowstone's peaceful forests.

Yellowstone to Grand Teton National Park

Today reveals the incredible forces that shaped Yellowstone.

Witness the famous eruption of Old Faithful, explore the vibrant colors of Grand Prismatic Spring, and walk among the steaming landscapes of Norris Geyser Basin. These remarkable geothermal wonders offer a glimpse into the immense power beneath the Earth's surface.

Continue south into Grand Teton National Park, where rugged granite peaks rise dramatically above pristine lakes and forests. Arrive at Colter Bay before settling into your comfortable lodge near Moran.

Begin the day with a peaceful float along the Snake River, surrounded by the breathtaking backdrop of the Teton Range. This unforgettable experience offers wonderful opportunities to observe wildlife while enjoying one of the most beautiful landscapes in America.

Explore iconic locations including the Chapel of the Transfiguration, historic Mormon Row, Schwabacher Landing, and Oxbow Bend—photographic treasures that capture the spirit of the American West.

Jackson Hole to Salt Lake City

Enjoy time in the welcoming mountain town of Jackson, with its famous elk-antler arches, galleries, shops, and unmistakable western character.

Continue south through the scenic Snake River Valley and into Utah, arriving in Salt Lake City. Visit the beautiful grounds of Temple Square before enjoying an elegant overnight at the superb Little America Hotel.

Canyonlands & Utah's Red Rock Country

Travel through some of the Southwest's most dramatic scenery, including the magnificent Price River Canyon before arriving at Canyonlands National Park, where the Island in the Sky district offers sweeping views across a vast wilderness of canyons, cliffs, and rivers carved into the landscape below.

Later continue to nearby Dead Horse Point State Park, where the sweeping panorama of the Colorado River and surrounding canyons creates one of the most unforgettable views in the Southwest.

Arches National Park

Discover a landscape unlike anywhere else on Earth in Arches National Park, home to thousands of natural stone arches, towering sandstone fins, balanced rocks, and remarkable formations sculpted by millions of years of wind and water. After the tour, Moab offers a leisurely afternoon to enjoy local galleries, shops, restaurants, and the welcoming atmosphere of this small town.

Monument Valley & Cameron Trading Post

Travel through the magnificent landscapes of southeastern Utah toward legendary Monument Valley.

Along the way, pass dramatic landmarks including Wilson Arch, Bluff, and Mexican Hat before arriving among the towering sandstone formations of Navajo Tribal Park. Rising hundreds of feet above the desert floor, these iconic buttes have become symbols of the American West. Enjoy lunch surrounded by this unforgettable scenery before continuing across the Navajo Nation to Cameron., AZ.

All Aboard! The Grand Canyon and the Grand Canyon Railway

Today brings you to the spectacular finale of your western adventure—the Grand Canyon. We enter through the quieter East Entrance and follow the magnificent South Rim, stopping at breathtaking viewpoints where the canyon's immense scale and extraordinary beauty unfold before you.

After time to appreciate this natural wonder, board the historic Grand Canyon Railway for a nostalgic journey through Arizona's high country to Williams. Continue to Flagstaff for your final evening at the Little America Hotel

Final travel home

After breakfast, your remarkable adventure through America's greatest landscapes comes to an end. Guests may take Amtrak's Southwest Chief home from Flagstaff, fly home from Flagstaff, or take our complimentary shuttle to Phoenix Sky Harbor airport, a scenic two-hour drive.

From Glacier's alpine wilderness to Yellowstone's geothermal wonders, from the towering Tetons to Utah's magnificent red rock country and the timeless grandeur of the Grand Canyon, this journey has captured the very essence of the American West.
